About Me
Nicolette Johnson, LPCC, LADC/LMAC
As a Provider
I believe therapy is for everyone and that it can address anything; there is no topic off the table! I hold the perspective that you as the client are the expert and know what is right for you. As your therapist, I will meet you where you are at and help you achieve your goals.
To foster you in your pursuit of growth, recovery, and wellness I will create a safe space and build a strong relationship with you. My approach has been described as warm, nonjudgmental, and individualized. I enjoy colorful language and encourage those that work with me to speak without worries about having to censor themselves. I utilize humor and creativity in my sessions.
My Specialties
My specialty is primarily in sex therapy. Struggling with sexuality can feel isolating, confusing, and painful. As a sex therapist, I’m passionate about helping others overcome barriers to sexual wellness. Finding pleasure after trauma or being given negative messages about sex can lead to difficulties accepting ones sexuality. Pain or dysfunction oftentimes lead to emotional distress. Having kinky desires, uncommon attractions, or engaging in non-monogamy can be isolating. Feeling out of control with our sexual behaviors is oftentimes difficult for the individual and others. I’m here to help you navigate these challenges and find wellbeing, self-acceptance, and pleasure.
I also have extensive experience in addressing trauma and substance use.
My Education & Experience
I received my undergraduate degree at the University of North Dakota before going on to obtain my Masters in Psychology with an emphasis in trauma at the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. Additional graduate level course work was taken at Minnesota State University of Moorhead to meet state licensure requirements.
My experience is broad and colored with a number of different focuses. I completed my internship at the VA in their substance use clinic. It was here that I developed a passion for treating substance use and working with military and their families. Since then I have worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, as an outreach/crisis therapist, in substance use specific outpatient, in correctional facilities, and in a private practice. It has been a privilege to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds.
Personally
On a personal note I am married and the mom to two of the cutest kiddos. Our family includes 1 dog and 1 cat, who mostly tolerate each other. We are a proud military family and my partner remains active in the Army National Guard. When I am not working I enjoy reading, going to the gym, socializing with friends, and exploring the world with my family. I also have an interest in bird-watching and keep meaning to start a yoga practice.
